Completing his first teaching year, CJ Hand takes a break between summer and fall academic sessions for relaxation in the Pine Ridge country of northwest Nebraska. His initial plans change because of the recent death of a man allegedly attacked by a large mountain lion. The suspicious mountain lion attack, not refuted, will stand unless new evidence comes to light. CJ settles into the old cabin where he planned to stay and begins to struggle with the evidence pointing to the mountain lion being the blame for the unknown person's death.
The sun breaking over the pine-dotted ridge beckons him for his five-mile run. A gorgeous, chilly morning begins with a scent of pine and the soft rustle of cottonwood leaves but rapidly changes when a shroud of mist descends on Dead Man's canyon. Less than a mile into his jog, he faces a large cougar, which leads him on the path to another death.
New clues lead CJ through the ridges, not to find the cougar, but to discover and face something much more menacing to the quiet Pine Ridge countryside than a mountain lion. Both men stumble into an international corporate conspiracy involving Dead Man's Canyon.
